WHAT ARE GMOS AND WHERE CAN I GET NON-GMO FOOD NEAR ME?
You’d be hard-pressed to find someone who hasn’t heard about the existence of GMOs in our food, at this point. However, while most of us are aware that they exist, not many have a developed understanding of what GMOs actually are. Plus, what are the potential health risks of consuming GMOs, if any? How can someone go about avoiding GMOs and potentially eliminating them from their diet— even if it’s just one meal at a time?
What Are GMOs
Genetically modified organisms, more commonly known as GMOs, are actually quite simple. In order for something to qualify as a GMO, it must be a living organism that has somehow had its genetic code tweaked. This tends to occur as a result of human intervention, in particular. Transgenic technology and genetic engineering are popular methods of creating brand-new GMOs, before introducing them into the food supply.
Although GMOs are incredibly common in the food we consume (and they’re only growing more common, as new GMOs are created), the safety is still up in the air. As it stands, long-term feeding studies (that are both independent and credible) don’t yet exist. Due to this lack of scientific evidence of GMO safety, it’s difficult to say whether or not they’re truly safe for human consumption. As such, many individuals have since turned their backs on GMOs, going out of their way to avoid these sorts of ingredients — at least, wherever possible.
Not only that, but GMOs also pose a risk to the environment. Many GMO ingredients are crafted to be resistant to herbicides, for instance. However, this leads farmers to use greater quantities of toxic herbicides, which are known to be damaging to the Earth. There’s also a possibility that these commonly-used herbicides can be carcinogenic to humans, which only exacerbates the situation.
